Lafarge Establishes Exshaw/Lac Des Arcs Education Endowment

$315,000 legacy fund to be managed by Banff Community Foundation

Exshaw, AB - Today, Lafarge in Exshaw announced a $315,000 legacy project that will see future leaders who reside in the neighbouring communities of Exshaw and Lac Des Arcs become eligible for a $5,000 scholarship toward their first year of post-secondary training or education. Managed by The Banff Community Foundation, the first two scholarships will be available for the school year beginning September, 2014.

Lafarge has a long tradition of supporting communities and building better cities. In 2012, the Company put in place a renewed community investment program to support programs and projects across the Bow Valley in the areas of Education, Environment and Sustainable Construction, Lafarge's three pillars for giving. A volunteer program, where Lafarge employees give time to causes aligned to these pillars, was also established.

"Since we announced our commitment to our pillars for giving in 2012, it's been our vision to develop another program that is Exshaw and Lac Des Arcs focused, as these are the communities closest to our plant," says Heinz Knopfel, Lafarge's Exshaw Plant Manager. "Education is one of the most important investments we can make in our future, and we see this as the ideal opportunity to invest in the future of the families living closest to our operations."

"This announcement by Lafarge is an exemplary display of community leadership and community building," says Executive Director of The Banff Community Foundation, Lorraine Widmer-Carson. "Lafarge's commitment to the sustainability of our world for future generations and their wish to work with local partners is truly inspirational. The Foundation is delighted to be selected as the trusted steward for catalyzing their vision for years to come. This is legacy work. Today's announcement is a benchmark of optimism and illustrates that business, community and philanthropy are thriving partners in Exshaw, Lac Des Arcs, and the greater Bow Valley."

Details of the Lafarge Education Endowment are still coming together, according to Knopfel, who wanted to make the announcement now, as many students are thinking about their post-secondary choices. Future leaders who have lived in Exshaw or Lac Des Arcs for five years take priority for funding. If there are years when no students come forward from these two communities, the scholarship will become available to any Bow Valley resident - from Morley to Lake Louise -- who meets the funding criteria. Details about how to apply for the scholarship will be released by The Banff Community Foundation June 12 (www.banffcommunityfoundation.org).

Each year, Lafarge in Exshaw funds additional initiatives related to its pillars for giving. To learn more about its community giving programs or plant operations, visit Lafarge's website. Applications for funding can be filled out online (http://www.lafarge-na.com/wps/portal/na/en/Exshaw/6_4-Community_Support_Application_Form) and are considered by a committee each quarter.
