Lafarge Columbus Quarry Receives NSSGA Gold Award

Chicago, IL

Lafarge North America Inc.

Lafarge North America is proud to announce that its Columbus aggregates quarry in Midland, Ga. received the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association's (NSSGA) Gold Award for environmental excellence. Each year, the NSSGA presents the award to members in the United States and Canada who go above and beyond environmental regulatory requirements and show a commitment to environmental stewardship.

"We are proud to be recognized by the NSSGA for the multiple environmental initiatives on our site," said vice president and general manager of Georgia Aggregates Jason Teter. "These projects help our site operate more efficiently and also allow us to continue our commitment to sustainability and improving our environment."

The NSSGA grants its Gold Award to operations that contribute to the stewardship of the environment that is in and around their sites. The NSSGA also takes into account how much an operation surpasses technical and environmental regulatory requirements and applicants must have no pattern of regulatory violations within a full two years before applying.

The Columbus quarry has multiple initiatives on-site dedicated to environmental stewardship, including water and air quality, biodiversity, and waste minimization. The quarry installed fixed sprays on the entrance and exit roads to control the dust created by vehicle traffic. Collected storm water run-off and pit dewatering provides the water used on site. The quarry also made robust wildlife habitat improvements to its settling pond by installing platforms for water fowl and turtles.

Sustainability and giving back to the communities surrounding its U.S. operations is one of Lafarge's core values. Environmental projects organized by local operations, such as those created by the Columbus quarry, reflect a culture of environmental stewardship practiced at all levels.
