Lafarge Announces Plans to Close its Fredonia, KS Cement Plant

Fredonia, Kan.

Lafarge North America Inc.

Lafarge North America today announced plans to close its Fredonia Cement Plant in Southeast Kansas in 2012.  This plant, in operation since 1907, will close due to the continued challenging economic environment in the US.

The Fredonia plant has supplied the Kansas and surrounding markets with top of the line cement for more than 100 years.  The plant, in partnership with Systech Environmental Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lafarge North America, has been a leader in the use of alternative wastes as fuel for the cement manufacturing process.

Lafarge will continue to produce cement at Fredonia until the closure, which is anticipated to take place in approximately five months.  As a committed producer in the US, Lafarge will continue to supply its customers from its nearby Sugar Creek and Tulsa plants once the Fredonia plant closes.

Lafarge will focus on making this transition for the seventy-three employees at the plant as smooth as possible and will explore opportunities at Lafarge's other plants for employees interested in transferring. Outplacement assistance and counseling services is also being provided.  Olivier Biebuyck, President of the Cement River Business Unit of Lafarge North America, said:  "The Fredonia employees have demonstrated tremendous professionalism and commitment over the years and many have worked at the plant for decades. We recognize the impact this decision will have on their lives and their families and we will help them during this difficult transition. The plant also has been a contributor to the local economy and we want to thank the community for all its support over the years."
