Lafarge Ready Mix Wins Big With Sustainable Construction Project

Sugar Creek, MO

Lafarge North America Inc.

Lafarge North America's Kansas City Ready Mix operations was honored to receive six 2010 Excellence in Concrete Awards from the Concrete Promotional Group for projects completed in the Kansas City area. Among the six projects recognized was one of Lafarge's sustainable construction projects. Also, the company won the Overall Concrete award.

The sustainable construction project that was recognized was in the Pervious Pavement Category for Lafarge's work on the KCATA Troost Buss MAX Improvements.  This project utilized one of Lafarge's Ultra Series® concrete blends - its pervious tri-blend concrete. The Kansas City transportation department needed a low maintenance, aesthetically pleasing, space saving alterative to standard concrete or asphalt. Lafarge worked with the city and proposed a pervious concrete alternative. The project was re-designed to incorporate the green alternative in areas best suited for the utilization of this sustainable product. The pervious is being used for stormwater runoff, snow removal and to help water the trees and garden area.

The project was successfully completed in mid-2010. Since its completion, the transportation department has designed multiple Bus MAX projects incorporating similar sustainable practices.

"Through our sustainable construction commitment, Lafarge is looking to be more than a supplier of building materials, but rather a provider of solutions, as well as a source of information, knowledge and consultation to our partners throughout the entire construction process," said Leif Yderstad, Vice President / General Manager for Lafarge's Missouri Ready Mix operations.  "Being recognized with these types of awards from the industry is a clear step in that direction."

Additionally, Lafarge North America won the overall concrete award for its work on the Kansas City Zoo's Polar Bear exhibit.  This project utilized all of Lafarge's Value Added Products: Agilia®, Chronolia®, Artevia® and Ultra Series® mixes. This was a very high profile project in Kansas City, since the new exhibit was positioned to become the major attraction at the zoo.  The project turned out pristine and has contributed to an increase in attendance at the KC Zoo by 15%.
