Lafarge And Living Lands And Water's Illinois River Cleanup A Huge Success

Chicago, Illinois

Lafarge North America Inc.

Lafarge North America, along with the national organization Living Lands and Water, recently partnered to sponsor a clean up along the Illinois River, near Lafarge's Joliet and Aux Sable Quarries at Big Basin Marina (I-55 and Front Road) in Channonhon, Illinois.  Volunteers for the cleanup included Lafarge employees and their families, and employees from Hampton, Lenzini and Renwick, Inc, a consulting group that has assisted Lafarge with several environmental projects.

Over the last decade, Living Lands and Water has removed more than four million tons of trash from America's river.  "Lafarge North America has partnered with this great organization in the past at some of our other sites and was delighted to have the opportunity to do so again," said Matthew Dantinne, General Manager for Lafarge Midwest Aggregates business unit.  "We value the relationships we have with the communities in which we operate and welcome the chance to give back and improve the environment in which we live," continued Dantinne.

The event attracted more than 25 volunteers, who collected 19 tires and four full dumpsters of trash.  Prizes were presented in seven categories, including most unusual piece of trash and largest piece of trash.  As an example, the most unusual piece of trash was a model of intestines and the largest piece of trash was a refrigerator door.
