Lafarge Secures New Marketing Agreements to Meet Growing Customer Demand for Full-Service Fly Ash Programs in North Texas

Lafarge North America Inc.

Herndon, VA

Beginning January 1, 2009, company's local technical sales team will offer high-quality fly ash from AEP's Welsh and Oklaunion power plants to customers throughout region.

Lafarge, the largest diversified supplier of construction materials in North America, today announced that it has secured two new agreements for marketing high-quality Class C fly ash from American Electric Power's Welsh (Cason) and Oklaunion (Vernon) power stations in North Texas. The fly ash agreements will expand Lafarge's product offerings in the east / west corridor of I-20 between Shreveport, LA, and Odessa, TX, and position the company to better serve customers throughout the Dallas - Fort Worth metroplex.

Derived from burning coal in electric utility plants, fly ash is used in geo-technical applications for soil stabilization as well as a supplementary cementitious material for many high-performance concretes used in constructing roads, bridges and commercial buildings. In addition to its many performance and economic advantages, fly ash use in concrete is beneficial to the environment as it recycles a by-product material from another industrial process. It also allows ready mix concrete producers to optimize their use of portland cement, thereby reducing the carbon footprint and lowering the embedded energy of concrete.

With over 50 years of experience in the business, Lafarge has well established and highly regarded fly ash programs throughout North America, including an award-winning program with Excel Energy in the Texas Panhandle. In addition to reliable product supply through the company's world-class distribution system, Lafarge has a rigorous quality assurance program, rigid product standards, and strategically located technical centers and testing laboratories throughout the U.S. and Canada.

"The company will bring its fly ash expertise, applications know-how, technical resources and other services to customers through a technical sales force in the North Texas area," said Wade Herguth, vice president of sales and marketing for Lafarge Cement's River Business Unit. "For customers it's the best of both worlds - all the strength and resources from the leader in construction materials combined with the personal touch and responsiveness of local sales professionals."
