Alternative Raw Materials
In today’s world, every business needs to be smarter about how it manages waste. At Lafarge, we offer a key service by recovering waste and byproducts from other industries to use in place of non-renewable resources.

At the Bath plant we manufacture cement with a recycled content of approximately 8%. While this number may seem small, it is important to remember that limestone accounts for approximately 85% of our raw materials, and thus the 8% is more than half of the remaining 15%.

The limiting factor is the availability of alternate raw materials that contain the elements required to produce high quality cement. We continue to pursue other opportunities with respect to raw material sourcing.

The materials used are fly ash from coal fired power generating facilities, steel slag and silica slag from steel manufactures, spent catalyst from oil refineries, and, when available, sand from foundry castings. These materials supplement our natural raw materials leading to better stewardship of natural resources.
