Improving Our Employees' Health and Safety

Lafarge seeks to become the safest company in its sector. We regularly conduct safety audits at the Group's different sites, and have taken specific safety measures to with the aim of reaching our objective of zero fatal accidents and reducing lost-time accidents to the greatest extent possible.


The Group also participates in a number of public health programs aimed at its employees and local communities. For example, the global partnership with CARE, an NGO (non-governmental organization), has resulted in practical, community-based programs to fight AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. A Group with global reach also has responsibilities at a local level.

For Lafarge, inclusion means a way of working together where all profiles and forms of diversity are able to bring their unique value.


The Group's approach on diversity, adopted more than 20 years ago, has been gradually expanded and now covers different areas:


  • Gender: equal treatment for men and women within Lafarge.
  • Nationality: senior leadership teams mirroring the diverse cultures within the Group, which operates in more than 70 countries, particularly emerging ones.
  • Thinking styles: the launch of Extra Mile requires the adoption of bolder and more entrepreneurial practices and thinking styles, to expand our market. It is therefore necessary to welcome a broad variety of profiles and expertise!
  • Other diversity focus areas: as an international leader, Lafarge believes in the values of diversity, in areas such as sexual orientation, age, disability...


During the last years our teams become more and more diverse and this is clearly visible at senior management level. The percentage of women in senior management increased from 13.5% in 2010 to 18.6% in 2013.


Preserving the environment and tackling global warming


Lafarge's operations require the use of large quantities of nonrenewable raw materials. Lafarge strives to limit its CO2 emissions by:

  • improving industrial processes,
  • using alternative fuels and materials as part of an industrial ecology strategy,
  • promoting sustainable construction methods.


With our Sustainability Ambitions 2020, we renewed our commitments:

  • a 33% reduction of CO2 emissions per ton of cement produced by the end of 2020, compared with 1990 levels;
  • develop sustainable construction in cities, based on solutions that improve the energy efficiency of buildings all along their life cycle.
