Concrete Is Sustainable

Concrete is one of the most widely used materials on Earth. Many of its properties make it the most effective and sustainable material for construction.

Sustainability Properties of Concrete

Concrete is applauded by many design professionals as one of the most versatile and sustainable construction materials available. Many factors demonstrate that concrete is efficient, healthy and sustainable. Below are some of the major factors that make this amazing material healthy and sustainable.

Thermal Mass - This describes the ability to store heat and release it later. In utilizing this property of concrete, one can build a space that is less susceptible to large temperature fluctuations.

Local Material - When mixed with water, concrete is a perishable product. For this reason, it is generally produced in close proximity to its final destination. Furthermore, using local ingredients is essential to a high-performance concrete plant.

Recycled Material - Concrete can accept a number of waste materials that would otherwise be land-filled. These materials can improve the performance of concrete and make it more affordable. Also, at the end of its useful life, concrete can be crushed and re-used as a coarse aggregate in new concrete production.

Durable - Concrete structures have withstood the test of time. Designers and builders have relied on concrete for centuries. Performance concretes are less susceptible to the effects of weathering, chemical attack and abrasion.

Surface Reflectivity - Dark surfaces exposed to the sun can create an "urban heat island effect" in dense, urban environments. The reflective surface-especially in conjunction with integral color technology-helps concrete minimize the urban heat island effect. In addition, when used as an exposed surface, concrete's light reflectivity can be harnessed to reduce the lighting demand in interior or exterior applications.
