Lafarge Presque Isle Quarry Recognized as Community Leader in Healthy Living

On February 12, Lafarge North America's Presque Isle Quarry was awarded the 2015 Alpena Regional Medical Center's Health Leadership Award. This award is presented each year by the medical center's development council to an area business that has takenstepsto create healthier lifestyles for its staff and the community as a whole.

 

"It was a humbling experience to be recognized by our community for our ambition and efforts in promoting wellness," saidAllan Idalski, Presque Isle Quarry manager. "Achieving the utmost health and wellness for our employees is something every Lafarge plant strives for."

 

The award was presented to Presque Isle Quarrymanager Allan Idalski, operations manager Hans Schrama, and the Alpena Cement Plant manager Paul Rogers, in front of 600 guests at the Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner. 

 

The Quarry promoted several wellness initiatives throughout 2014, including its 5K quarry run last August to raise money for the Alpena Regional Medical Center, through which it succeeding in raising $35,000. This run provided employees and their families with the opportunity to participate in a healthy event andallowed other residents of northeast Michigan to enjoyafun, family-oriented activity. Participants ranged fromthree to 74 years old. The Presque Isle Quarry is already working on preparing for its second annual 5K later on this year.

 

The Alpena Medical Center Development Council is comprised of local citizen volunteers working with hospital leaders to raise funds and build partnerships to ensure it is continually providing patients with the best healthcare and diagnostic capabilities. The health leadership award is presented specifically by the council's business relations committee, recognizing businesses that promote health, encourage other businesses to adopt similar programs, and support the hospital by promoting it throughout the community.

 

 

Over the past 12 months, the Presque Isle Quarry also provided its employees with a variety of other opportunities to develop healthy lifestyles and to promote wellness, including access to a smoke-free workplace, employee assistance program (EAP), first aid/CPR training, flu shots, lifestyle screenings, nutrition programs, smoking cessation programs, weight loss programs and other health and safety programs.
