Lafarge Canada, Inc. is investing $60 million to expand current capacity and add more automation to its northern Alberta precast operations.  Growing customer demand in the energy, infrastructure, commercial and residential markets drives this expansion.

Current plant capacity will be more than doubled with a new state of the art plant, breaking ground in 2014. The additional site will adopt the latest automation technology including robotics and full scale computer-aided design and manufacturing.

“The construction industry is demanding more of our precast concrete solutions to fulfill building and infrastructure growth.  Precast offers unique benefits in the construction, design and procurement phases.  In addition, end users gain with energy efficiency, long life and safety” commented René Thibault, CEO of Lafarge in Western Canada.

In Southern Alberta, an upgrade of the Calgary plant is underway as well.  This will improve Lafarge’s use of automation and provide additional capacity for production of structural and architectural products.

Alberta precast expansions will be designed to incorporate leading edge sustainability concepts and methods within our processes.  Lafarge uses the Canadian Precast Concrete Institute’s Sustainable Plant program to measure our environmental impact while furthering our culture of sustainability.

In addition to precast concrete, Lafarge in Western Canada provides solutions in aggregates, asphalt, cement, concrete pipe, ready-mix concrete and road construction.  Lafarge employs 2,470 in Alberta and has 141 operational sites.  The company focuses its community investment in the areas of education, environment and sustainable construction with partners including Habitat for Humanity, The Calgary Zoo’s Centre for Conservation Research, The University of Alberta, University of Calgary and Alberta Institutes of Technology (NAIT and SAIT).
