Manitoba Premier's Volunteer Service Award Presented to Lafarge

Staff recognized for selfless commitment as intregral part of Norquay School

Winnipeg, Manitoba

Lafarge Canada Inc.

Lafarge Canada Inc.'s commitment to community involvement was recognized by The Honourable Greg Selinger at the 30th annual award program on April 24th.  Amongst 116 nominees, Lafarge was selected as a standout for its seven year dedication to Norquay School.

The Premier's Office, in cooperation with Volunteer Manitoba, established this award to honour the efforts and dedication of outstanding volunteers in Manitoba; and recognize and encourage the valuable services performed by volunteers throughout the province.

Norquay School Principal, Nancy Dyck commented in her nomination letter, "If leadership is defined as ‘a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task'  then Lafarge staff are- without question- community leaders."

Lafarge's ambition is to Build Better Cities.  Its worldwide Sustainability Ambitions 2020 drive volunteerism as a key element in building community.  Employees in Winnipeg currently receive an extra vacation day per year to give back to the community and plans are to double the commitment.

Norquay School's demographic represents families who struggle economically and are often in need.  Lafarge's financial and volunteer support allows extra programming such as Family & Schools Together and Numeracy and Literary evenings to exist.  Employees provide hands-on help about twenty times per year.

Andy Dutfield, Lafarge Vice President for the Winnipeg area shared this sentiment, "I could not be more proud of our employees who have taken such a heartfelt interest in Norquay School over the long term.  During my volunteer hours at the school I am touched by the simple needs we are able to fulfill.  The appreciation directly from the children is incredibly rewarding."
