Lafarge's Quivas Ready Mix Plant Holds Emergency Rescue Training Event

Reston, VA

On October 14th Lafarge North America's Quivas Ready Mix (RMX) plant in Denver, Colorado held confined space rescue training led by Lieutenant Josh Little and other members of the Denver Fire Department (DFD).

The RMX plant asked the fire department to develop a mock training scenario based on the rescue of a worker from inside the plant's concrete mixing drum. The goals of the training were to demonstrate a safe and efficient confined space entry, with a victim rescue using a method known as high angle rope extrication.

In addition to training plant personnel on critical emergency procedures, the exercise helped the DFD become more familiar with Lafarge's operation, so they can better assist them with their emergency response protocols. "Training scenarios like these give us a chance to improve as well," said Lieutenant Little. "We ran through today's exercise twice, and were able to complete the rescue 8 minutes faster the second time around due to more effective communication."

"I want to thank Lieutenant Little, and the other DFD members who led us through this important training," said Quivas RMX Plant Manager Nate Kaspar. "The health and safety of our employees and contractors is priority one at Lafarge. Although our first line of defense against safety risks is prevention, it is equally important for us to know how to respond in the event an accident does occur."

Lafarge is proud of its record as one of the safest companies in its business sector. Training exercises like the one at Quivas is just one example of how Lafarge continually works to foster a culture of health and safety throughout its organization.
