Lafarge and Columbia University Launch New Book Focused on Concrete's Reemergence in Architecture

Reston, VA

Lafarge North America Inc.

Yesterday, Lafarge, in partnership with Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP), announced the launch of Solid States: Concrete in Transition, a book that examines the use of concrete in today's architecture.

Compiled after the 2008 conference at Columbia University called Solid States: Changing Time for Concrete, the book calls upon a diverse group of experts to examine concrete's reemergence at the cutting edge of contemporary architecture, engineering and design.

Yesterday's event featured presentations by key members of GSAPP faculty and staff, as well as Lafarge's Director of Research and Development Pascal Casanova. "We are proud to partner with Columbia University, and to sponsor this book's publication," says Casanova. "Solid States is a tremendously valuable resource for the building community, as innovations in concrete continue to expand both its versatility and its potential to become a material of choice in sustainable construction and development."

Lafarge's partnership with Columbia University is one of the company's many strategic partnerships with some of the world's finest research teams and universities. In North America these include the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California at Berkeley, Princeton University, the University of Toronto, the University of Austin, Texas and the University of New Brunswick among several others. These partnerships foster collaboration and the exchange of information and ideas that keeps Lafarge on the leading edge of new trends and innovation in the building sector.

Sponsoring the 2008 Solid States conference, and the newly launched Solid States book, is in keeping with Lafarge's commitment to promoting sustainable construction materials and methods that limit the environmental impact of construction, while guaranteeing the highest quality in aesthetics and durability.
