Lafarge Recognized By Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) And Ducks Unlimited For Outstanding Environmental Achievement

Fredonia, KS

Lafarge North America Inc.

Lafarge North America's Fredonia Cement Plant in Kansas was recently awarded the 2010 Wings over Wetlands Award from the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) and Ducks Unlimited (DU).  This award recognizes the habitat conservation work being done at the plant.

The Wings over Wetlands award was created by DU and WHC to encourage active corporate participation in wetland stewardship and to recognize those corporations that have excelled in restoring, protecting and managing wetland habitat on their sites.

Among its diligent and regular focus on the environment and biodiversity, the efforts that gained the Fredonia plant recognition by the WHC and DU include: the construction of two wetland marshes, five waterfowl nesting islands, and the establishment nesting boxes for Mallard and Wood ducks.  The site also reorganized its wetlands management plan to allow wetlands to be managed by type and it increased the monitoring and record keeping of the wildlife using the wetlands areas.

"We are honored to receive this award from these two well-respected organizations," said Sean Brennan, Plant Manager at the Fredonia Cement plant.  "We have a group of employee volunteers we call our ‘Green Team' who lead our wetlands efforts, along with the continued support of all our plant employees.  Looking after and giving back to our environment is integral into how we conduct our business and we look forward to building upon our efforts every year," continued Brennan.

The Fredonia Cement plant accepted its award at the WHC's annual symposium held in Baltimore, MD.
