Lafarge Celebrates Earth Day with DuraClime

Calgary, Alberta

Lafarge North America Inc.

Lafarge Canada Inc. is pleased to announce that on Earth Day (April 22nd), it will exclusively produce its energy-saving, emissions-reducing DuraClimeasphalt, and related warm mix products, at all operational asphalt plants in Western Canada.

Bob Spence, Lafarge's Vice President of Asphalt & Paving for Western Canada, commented, "As the leader in our industry, we are continually striving to minimize our impact on the environment. DuraClime is one of our ways of inspiring awareness and appreciation of the environment, not only on Earth Day but into the future."

Unlike conventional hot mix asphalt that must be heated to temperatures between 140oC and 170oC, Lafarge's DuraClime asphalt employs warm mix asphalt technology, and is produced between 100oC and 135oC. This reduces the energy consumed and emissions produced. Tests have repeatedly demonstrated the superior technical performance of DuraClime, as well as the environmental benefits. Warm mix technology has been used successfully in Europe since 1996.

If all asphalt produced in Western Canada was warm mix, there would be a 41,316 tonnes reduction in the amount of C02 produced. This offset is equivalent to the emissions produced by 8,463 passenger vehicles in an average year.

In today's world of energy and environmental consciousness, people want every opportunity to reduce their impact. One way to have enormous impact is right under our feet-choosing DuraClime asphalt instead of traditional hot mix for paving.
