Lafarge Dedicates Renewable Fuel Project at Sugar Creek Cement Plant with Partners Waste Management and Republic Services

The plant burns landfill gas to reduce coal use by nearly 20% and reduce CO2 emissions by 33,000 tons per year. Using this renewable fuel is the equivalent of planting over 8,000 acres of forest or removing emissions from over 5,500 motor vehicles.
Lafarge, the largest supplier of cement products in the U.S. and Canada, now uses landfill gas to replace nearly 20% of its coal at its cement plant in Sugar Creek, Missouri. The project uses 2,400 cubic feet per minute of gas collected from nearby closed and operating landfills located near Mo-291 highway and Courtney Road. Landfill gas, about 50% methane, is produced from the natural decomposition of landfill waste.
The gas flow commenced following a dedication ceremony held April 17, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. at the Rumble Landfill at 2031 N. Courtney Road in Sugar Creek. Distinguished speakers included:

Representing a nearly $2-million investment, the landfill gas system removes moisture from the gas, measures its volume and heat value, and transports it through over 6500 feet of pipe piping under Mo-291, under Courtney Road, and up into the plant's preheat tower. The system was engineered and assembled by Missouri contractors and suppliers.

"What was once wasted will now reduce our emissions, reduce local truck traffic, and provide economic benefit to all of us. The plant already uses non-recyclable shredded paper, plastics, textiles, and rubber as an alternate fuel. Along with landfill gas, we're proud to report that our renewable fuels use has increased from 7% last year to nearly 30% of the total energy needed to produce high quality cements used in the central Midwest," added Huntley. "This is a great example of Lafarge's efforts to improve our industry's overall sustainability."
