Joppa, IL

Lafarge North America Inc.

Lafarge North America's Joppa, Illinois cement plant is proud to have recently received the "Wellness in our Workplace" award from the Illinois State Council for the Society for Human Resource Management, in conjunction with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois.

The award is in recognition of the plant's innovative and successful health and wellness program.

"This wellness program is one more way that Lafarge is demonstrating our commitment to our employees - not just from a professional standpoint, but from a personal one as well," said Michael Klenke, Joppa's Plant Manager. "Safety is Lafarge's top priority and we believe that health goes hand-in-hand with safety. To date, we have seen incredible results from our program and this type of positive impact is benefiting our employees both at work and at home."

Joppa's health and wellness team's program is geared toward wellness activities, healthy food choices, awareness, and family involvement. Elements of the program include blood pressure checks, walking club, providing healthy food choices at meetings, monthly wellness slogan, advertise and pay entry fees for community walking/running events, a "Biggest Loser" competition and their wellness day off work program.

In its second year, the number of participating employees continues to increase and the results keep getting better. In 2009, participating employees lost 242 lbs through its Biggest Loser weight loss program and for 2010 the employees have pledged to lose 330 lbs. The program continues to gain momentum and support as its awareness increases to the benefit of all employees.
