introduCtion The scopes of nationally accepted ASTM specifications are highlighted in this section for reference. The CSA counterpart to the denoted ASTM specifications has been identified where appropriate. • ASTM C 14 Concrete Sewer, Storm Drain and Culvert Pipe: Covers nonreinforced concrete pipe in three strength classes intended to be used for the conveyance of sewage, industrial wastes, storm water, and for the construction of culverts in sizes from 100 mm (4 inches) through 900 mm (36 inches) in diameter. CSA Specification Designation A257.1 • ASTM C 76 Reinforced Concrete Culvert, Storm Drain, and Sewer Pipe: Covers reinforced concrete pipe in five strength classes intended to be used for the conveyance of sewage, industrial wastes, and storm waters, and for the construction of culverts. Class I includes pipe sizes of 1500 mm (60 inches) through 3600 mm (144 inches) in diameter; Class II, III, IV and V include pipe sizes of 300 mm (12 inches) through 3600 mm (144 inches) in diameter. Larger sizes and higher classes are available as special designs. CSA Specification Designation A257.2 • ASTM C 118 Concrete Pipe for Irrigation or Drainage: Covers concrete pipe intended to be used for the conveyance of irrigation water under low hydrostatic heads, generally not exceeding 75 m (25 feet), and for use in drainage in sizes from 100 mm (4 inches) through 600 mm (24 inches) in diameter. • ASTM C 361 Reinforced Concrete Low-head Pressure Pipe: Covers reinforced concrete pipe intended to be used for the construction of pressure pipelines in sizes from 300 mm (12 inches) through 2700 mm (108 inches) in diameter with low internal hydrostatic heads, generally not exceeding 375 m (125 feet). ASTM C 76 is the most referred to specification for concrete pipe, as the majority of project designs are based on the five strength classes outlined within the document.
